Hiding by Rai-che Hiding by Rai-che
A colored sketch commission for ironcrux (www.furaffinity.net/user/ironc… on FA, who was so amazing to let me do anything with his grey hare character <3

As an artist who is mainly focused on history of Napoleonic wars, I went for Retreat from Moscow. A French hare hiding from Russian cossack bear in an abadoned cottage somewhere in woods. Prepared to defend himself with a dragoon carbine he found on his way.

It was unusual to draw animals instead of humans in such theme but I enjoyed it, since animals are much more easier to draw than humans (at least for me) and bring the picture more contrast from physiognomy to actual symbolistic features.

I hope you understand and this will not drive you away from my art. I thought more of a classic fables from children books than furry when I was drawing this.

(Also damn I want snow!)

Russian cossacks were just plain brutal when they harrased the retreating army. Since they weren't official or regular army they did whatever they pleased without restraint. They only got advisories and some assistance from them regular Russian army. But I guess the cossack horsemen where pissed with good reason being the French ravaged everything left behind during the end of summer that the russians missed to burn or salvage (part of their scorched earth static)

This is very strange, but in a good way! I love your style and how you portrayed the event using animals :)

even if it was a wee little mouse, the hare would still be hiding.

Aah I see now, you're talking with stereotypes here :D classy indeed, sir!

I'm not familiar with the personality of the hare character, I was given freedom of creativity, so I went for very possible situation with Napoleon's Grande Armée during retreat from Moscow in 1812, because I find the theme interesting and I portray it very often.
But I'm glad you got the symbolism in this after all. It made the picture easier to understand for all c:
